Long rallies break Sindhu's dream as An Se Young takes French Open final
PV Sindhu's French Open 2026 campaign ended one step short of the title, beaten 21-16, 11-21, 12-21 by world No. 1 An Se Young in a 61-minute women's singles final at Arena Grand Paris. Sindhu took the opening game, then managed only 23 points across the next two, against An Se Young's 42. The match produced 102 points in 61 minutes — roughly 36 seconds per point, the tempo of a long-rally contest rather than a quick, attacking shootout. Sindhu named exactly that as the problem afterwards.
Game one: the plan worked
In the first game Sindhu did what her game does best — a high contact point, aggressive drives, and early net interceptions to shorten rallies. From 11-all she pulled away 10-5 and closed the game 21-16, helped by some early errors from An Se Young. But that formula has a short shelf life: it only works for as long as the opponent takes to find rhythm.
Games two and three: rhythm returned, control left
In the second game An Se Young produced her characteristic consistency, strung together a long run of points and took it 21-11. The third was level at 9-9 before the Korean broke away through exceptional court coverage and defence, closing 21-12. Combined across the last two games: 42-23. This was not a gradual fade but a collapse in capacity and consistency.
Sindhu's own diagnosis
Sindhu said afterwards that long rallies made converting opportunities difficult. That is technically accurate and it identifies the real problem. It means she was reaching the point of conversion but not finishing it — the issue lay not in constructing the position but in shot quality and shot selection under fatigue. At 31, that is not a tactical fix; it is a capacity issue, and therefore a much harder one.
Head-to-head
Eleven meetings, and Sindhu has taken a game in only two of them — this final being the second. This is not merely a losing record; it is a record in which she has rarely been competitive even at game level. The improvement is real but marginal. An Se Young is a genuine bogey opponent, and has been for years.
An Se Young: winning with her floor, not her ceiling
This title was not the product of her peak but of her ordinary level. She lost the first game, then won the next two by ten and nine points. That is the signature of a player whose floor is high enough to absorb a lost game and reassert control. The win is described as her fourth title at this event, though that figure could not be independently verified here. If correct, it reflects habit with the venue, understanding of the drift and protected top seeding — an advantage that recurs every season.
Sindhu's season: a real resurgence with a clear ceiling
Despite the defeat, 2026 is among the most solid seasons of Sindhu's late career. She won the Japan Open in July and is now French Open runner-up — both Super 750 events. Two Super 750 podiums in a single season at 31, one of them a title, is evidence of genuine form recovery rather than a soft draw. But that resurgence has a clear ceiling, and the ceiling sits at the top of the draw.
Two facts, one picture
Two Super 750 podiums and only two games taken in eleven meetings are not contradictory facts. Together they describe a player who is clearly top-8 calibre and clearly not top-1 calibre. The practical read: a quarter-final-to-final band is a realistic expectation at this stage of her career, with a title contingent on An Se Young being absent or exiting early.
What the tier tells us
The French Open is a Super 750, not a Super 1000. It is a significant result, but it cannot be treated as world-championship or Olympic-grade proof. Late in the season — after the July Japan Open and inside the World Tour Finals qualification window — it means different things to each player. For An Se Young it is evidence of durability across a long calendar; for Sindhu it is a heavy workload immediately before the season-ending Finals, which at 31 is itself a warning sign. Both the retrieval style and the attacking style exact a physical price, but for a tall attacking player that price is most visible at exactly this point in the year.
What next
Sindhu said afterwards that there is a lot of space and a lot of room still there. That is psychologically healthy and analytically sound — she has not conceded the gap. But the gap is not the product of one match; it is the product of playing-style structure. A long-rally contest is the hardest equation for a 31-year-old attacker, and at Super 750 level that equation will keep recurring. The real challenge for Sindhu is not beating the next opponent, but finding a sustainable way inside her own game to shorten rallies.
