Morkel Calls for India's Bowlers to Raise Their Standards, Cites IPL Form in Defence of Bhuvneshwar
Despite taking a 2-0 lead in the T20 series against New Zealand, India's bowling coach Morkel has sent a clear message to his bowlers that excuses are over and they must raise their standards from the third match in Wellington.
Morkel said that travel, jet lag and limited training sessions could explain the first two games, but there is no room for such excuses now. He noted that the team conceded a target of 226 in the first match and 180 in the second, which is well above acceptable levels. Christchurch's par score is considered 180-190, so conceding 226 is a serious concern.
Wellington's ground is large and strong winds will make conditions challenging for bowlers. The coach acknowledged that the home team's bowlers are more experienced in such conditions while Indian bowlers have had little preparation time.
Questions are being raised over Bhuvneshwar Kumar's performance, as he has taken just 1 wicket for 99 runs in 8 overs this series, an economy of 12.38. Morkel defended him, saying he returned after a long gap, had limited preparation and should trust his natural game. The coach cited his IPL form to argue his quality remains intact, while also conceding that international cricket is a different beast where margins for error are small.
The real test for India's bowling unit will come in Wellington, where they must adapt to the wind and big ground. The team's batting looks strong, but questions over bowling consistency remain, and the third match will decide whether India can maintain their dominance in the series.
